30-yr-old attempts suicide at AIIMS

NEW DELHI: A 30-year-old man attempted suicide by consuming poison outside AIIMS around 1am on Monday. Claiming that he was being harassed by cops, the man reportedly wanted to die in front of the Prime Minister. PM Manmohan Singh is recuperating at the hospital after a by-pass surgery.

Amit Kumar, a resident of Sultanpuri in northeast Delhi, thought his suicide would made the PM aware of cops' `goonda raj' in the city. "I don't want to live in fear. The police is running a goonda raj and I want the Prime Minister to care of this,'' he wrote on his left hand.

Even though the incident took place within 50 metres of the AIIMS premises, Amit allegedly lay frothing on the road for nearly 15 minutes before PCR van reached the spot. He was rushed to AIIMS Trauma Centre where his condition was stated to be stable.

When he was being carried away to the hospital, he reportedly shouted that he was being harassed by the police and land grabbers in Sultanpuri who have usurped his property there. According to eyewitnesses, he said that when he complained against the property grabbers, they got his brother implicated in a false case of kidnapping and got him jailed. He reportedly said he met senior police officers of the outer district including the DCP but his grievances were not redressed.

When contacted, Atul Katiyar, DCP (outer), said the police were investigating claims made by Amit. At the time of the incident, Amit was reportedly carrying a file which contained photocopies and receipts of the complaints he had made to various officers.
